This is pretty sweet, with no damage to the blade of the sword.
Damn, Japanese steel is some tough stuff.

yup, there's a reason the best BMX bikes are made from real Japanese SANKO steel

funny, the old process of making a sword is no longer needed. folding the metal in the past removed imperfections more than it did anything else, in fact folding weakens the metal to some degree. its a very fine line the old sword smith walked between brittle and hard. In the past japense steel was junk, hence the need to fold it. i have never heard of sanko metal but i have heard of sanko metals or something. but they just process and refine metals i belive imported from other places in the world.. could be wrong its been a few years since i looked into sword smithing. was gonna build a old style billow-run forge in my back yard.

oh i could keep going about the use of straw for adding carbon to the blade and how sand is used during folding to remove excess air as well as help temper the blade then clay to cool it .....lol i honestly cant remember if it is 15 or 13 folds for a "traditional sword though. the front edge of the blade is harder, the back softer, for those rare occasions when you do hit armor or another sword, softens impact. there are several different folds of metal put in too that i cant remember, softer and harder.
btw, if anyone has a permanent area in which i could setup a small sword forge, i would love the chance. didnt want to build one in my backyard.

Whats the reason?
if you didn't know - steel is refined iron
cheaper steels are less refine, thus not as strong, and heavier
Sanko Steel is the lightest, strongest steel in the industry - sheer and STT tests with other 4130 chromoly steels showed Sanko steel being about 20% stronger overall than others.
sword making is pretty nerdy, but when you build custom chassis for GT5 class JGTC cars you must know this stuff

Steel is Iron that has been infused with extra carbon. Imagen iron as an open framework of boxes. When it is heated up over coal, the framework expands and carbon molecules enter the frames, then when it is cooled the framework contracts trapping the carbon inside, the result is steel. Much more dense.

you see fellas...when a man loves a woman...they grind and heat minerals together in a fashion...and that my friends...is how swords are born. :)
